Why did I write Yes? Because almost all the hacks are social in nature. Folk continue to click on bad links, fall for fake "You have a virus" screens and so on. Whatsapp will not protect such folk so the answer is simply yes.

Few apps are thorouhly safe.

Each app opens the door to potential unsafe issues. For the most part this is all about apps that access the web or communicate.

Let's get an example of a safe app. The iPhone calculator is safe because it does only what it says it does and folks on the internet can't send you a message about "your phone has a virus" and trap the user with a social exploit.

I have to take the hard line here about how the apps lead to unsafe actions and therefore unsafe. If you have more experience and can avoid the social scams then it's fine.
