General discussion

It causes my computer to lock up:

I hate dial up so much!! You did not misread that title. Dial-up is causing my computer to lock up right after it has been connected. I will get high speed internet very early next year; one that does not require a telephone line.

The only computer that I have that is capable of connecting to a telephone line is Compaq SR1053WM. The modem card is Motorola SM56. I have several virus protection software such as AVG, Malware-bytes or something like that, SuperAntiSpyware, A-Squared, Ad-Aware, and some registry cleaner. The definitions on them are updated... Is this possible that it might be a hardware problem?? Whatever they put into a SR1053WM; I think it is ASUS motherboard, and it is AMD Processor. I already cleaned out the heatsink on it..............

Get your machine's repaired?

If under warranty you call it in. If out of warranty your choice to visit counters, change parts, reinstall the OS.

Usually by myself:

...I am building machines one part at a time. (or if it is completed unit, one accessory or peripheral at a time)

Anyways, I checked something that I thought was set correctly
(but it wasn't)
I lowered the maximum connection speed to a number that is lower than 56K instead of higher than 56K. There are numbers

1200,
2400,
4800,
9600,
19200,
38400,
57600,
115200,
230400,
460800,
921600,

I do not know why there are connection speeds that high if it is impossible to connect to them. It was set at 115200; I lowered it, and then I lowered it again.

And now I am able to post this message.

So far it hasn't locked up. The little computer icons in the system tray are lighting up. (many times it connected and the icons did not light up and of course pages weren't loading).

I think I am okay for this next two months.
