Question

Issue with upload bandwidth

May 1, 2018 10:36AM PDT

Hi there,
I work for a small family run pub in a rural area and they tasked me with solving a problem regarding their internet connection. The main router is upstairs in the house and there is an extender in the pub where most of the traffic goes to. However when i check the router statistics there is a huge difference between download usage and upload usage. In the space of two weeks there has been 250mb downloaded, which is fine but the upload usage is over 1GB.

I'm not sure how to approach this and deal with it. Its a very busy bar during the summer with tourists coming during the day, but they're using their iphones and smartphones for the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook/snapchat etc. so i'm not really sure how the upload usage is so high.

How should i approach this and what can i do to solve this issue?

Mostly tablets

Most the users are using tablets and smartphones. Very rarely a laptop is connected and they’re usually only day trip tourists who wouldn’t be returning and wouldn’t have access to the network. I have Windows 10 on my laptop but have the peer to peer disabled.

That might be it.

When I traveled my data on the phone was shut off and my pictures would upload when I hit a WiFi hotspot so nothing surprising that I would see more bytes uploading than downloading.

There are users that torrent on tablets or even phones and that could push it around but I'm going with my use pattern here. My pictures are going up to the cloud when I find an open hotspot.

Not that I can see.

You could see if your router has any feature to block torrents but the other stuff is now the norm as folk use Google Sync and iCloud.
