Issue with Pinnacle Studios 17 - won't play video

Hello again,

I am having issues with Pinnacle Studios 17. Earlier today, I was experiencing issues with audio/visual syncing.

While trying to figure out the problem, I think I may have hit a setting that is making it not play back audio. Now when I hit "play" on "source" and "timeline" videos, the video will move a frame and then stop while the audio continues to play.

I have tried dragging the marker back and forth on the timeline and preview. I have also tried closing out of the program several times and restarting the computer. Additionally, I have tried starting a new project. Same issue across the board.

Before I started having this issue, I received a pop-up from Windows Defender. I have no idea what it said as it popped up and then was gone. After it disappeared, I started having the issue.

The Defender icon appeared on the Pinnacle Studios icon:

A weird new file appeared alongside my project file:

Additionally, the properties disappeared from my timeline.  Now when I click an element to check its properties, I get a message saying that nothing is selected even when something is definitely selected:

If someone could shed some light on this issue and tell me how to fix it, I would most appreciate it.
