Question

Issue when connecting Laptop to LED TV

Jul 17, 2017 1:03AM PDT

I recently purchased an ASUS X556RK laptop. When I connected the laptop to my LG 4k capable TV I noticed what I can best describe as very minor frame rate drop with the overall display.

So when typing text, watching youtube videos, or even just moving the mouse, the image on the screen isn't smooth. I tried living with it at first but it's starting to get to me. It's most noticeable when I'm watching a film for instance and text is fading in/out, camera is panning across a room, water ripples etc.

I've tried to tinker with settings but no dice.

Model: ASUS x556URK
Processor: Intel Core i7 7500U CPU @ 2.7 GHz
12 GB RAM
Windows 10 Home 64 bit
Resolution: 4096 x 2160
Refresh rate: 30phz

I've looked around these forums and others but haven't been able to find anyone with the same issue.

I had a Sony VAIO that was connected to the same TV before with no issue.
Didn't notice the issue either when the ASUS was connected to an old full HD LCD TV.

Would appreciate any help.

- I assume it's OK if you use the 4096x2160 screen on the laptop itself?
- What's the resolution of the LG TV (you forgot to tell or mention the model)
- What was the resolution of that Sony VAIO?
- What graphic hardware did the Sony have? What graphic hardware the LG?
- What settings did you tinker with on the laptop? And on the TV?

I'm afraid it's some hardware limitation. Better check your next TV with your laptop, or your next laptop with your TV before buying it. These devices are expensive enough to warrant some pre-sales service in the shop.

LG model: 43UH651V

So I just went back and changed the display settings to 1920x1080, the same as what the VAIO was on with the TV.

Once I selected the 60p Hz rate the issue was resolved. Any other resolution that goes beyond 1920x1080 had a 30p Hz rate maximum. ASUS is whining that this isn't the optimum resolution but the stutter is completely gone.

The laptop, when unplugged to the TV, can only go up to 1920x1080.

Thanks for for the response. Your questions led me to what the issue was.

This probably should've been the first thing I checked, but I think a mixture of excitement and then frustration got me to try everything but.

Answer
Just a thing about HDMI versions.

For HDMI 1.x ports, up to 1080p can be 60Hz (lower rates may be supported depending on the HDTV.)

Go higher on HDMI 1.x ports and you should see it drop to 30Hz or lower.

60Hz frame rate at over 1080p is for HDMI 2.x ports.
