Islamic radicals' arrested in plot to kill Fort Dix soldiers

May 8, 2007 12:39AM PDT

- Six "Islamic radicals" involved in a plot to kill U.S. soldiers at Fort Dix in New Jersey were arrested Monday night, the U.S. attorney's office in New Jersey said Tuesday.

One of the suspects was born in Jordan, another in Turkey, the U.S. attorney's office said. The rest are believed to be from the former Yugoslavia, "either U.S. citizens or living illegally in the United States," the office said in a statement.

"Their alleged intention was to conduct an armed assault on the army base and to kill as many soldiers as possible," according to the statement.

The six are expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Camden on Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. attorney's office said in a statement.

The district attorney scheduled a news conference at 2:30 p.m. ET to discuss the case.

The men were planning to use automatic weapons to shoot soldiers at the Army post, according to a federal law enforcement source and a senior government source.

The men, some of whom were related to each other, had been doing surveillance and planning "for a while," and they trained in the Poconos Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania, according to the federal law enforcement source.

Notice it wasn't our government that found them

It was a suspicious photo lab tech when they brought their videos in to get them transferred to DVD. If they had a digital camera and a DVD burner on their computer, they would have been under the radar.

and you wouldn't want them to be. Diligence on the part of citizens it vital.

I have to say from what I've seen that these jihadists look to be idiots and probably would have been caught somewhere along the line anyway. I am not real impressed with the intelligence of most of these radical Muslims. They seem to be rather dimwitted for the most part. But I guess you can't be too smart to believe what they do.

Notice that a lot of crimes are solved by "tips"

Unfortunate that...

The news has already made public that the unknown tipster works at a Circuit City passed on the tip of possible radicals were hatching a plot. The news has placed that person life in jeopardy and may make others less helpful in the future should they think too long on it. This has happened before and for whatever reason were later "taken care of" in the less desirable way. The power of the press certainly at times isn't the power of thoughtfulness. ------Willy Happy

It's not always the press's fault

I've seen crime stories on the local news in which witnesses were perfectly OK being interviewed on camera and even providing their names and addresses on the air. Not saying that happened in this case but sometimes people are really not thinking.

..... Circuit City being identified as the workplace of the good citizen.

I haven't been in one of their stores in years, so I don't know if they offer the requested service.

Anyway, he was indeed quite brave to report to the authorities.

Nowadays, even with local crimes, folks are often hesitant to give information for fear of retaliation. Sort of like being held hostage by the bad guys.
