Is Winzip registered included with XP Home software purchase?

Dec 2, 2003 7:31AM PST

I've tried using Winzip to unzip a zip and it looks like it did, but I am unable to get the software working correctly (my problem).........anyhow, I want to know if Winzip is a program distributed as part of Windows XP software purchase and install or is Winzip (which was included on the XP Home software installed on my system) only an evaluation version of Winzip? If the actual Winzip software is included with XP then is there anything that needs to be done to activate it's features or is it ready to go?

Then there is a partial version included with XP Home? Not evaluation, but partial version?

It's a very simple version of WinZip. To compress/Zip a file, right click the file. Choose Send to, then choose Zip folder. You should be prompted where to save the zipped file.

It's not a regestered version of the full WinZip, just a quickie with no bells and whistles, not upgradable or updatable. Sort'a like the CD burner function of XP, all but useless, but useable.

To unzip a zipped file, right click it. Choose Open with, Compressed (zipped) folders. You should be prompted where to save the extracted file(s).

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't XP have a built in unzipper

and if so, why would one need a third party unzipper? (especially one where there is a fee?)

XP does have a built-in unzip S/W that is why you can unzip ziped files after a clean install of XP.

If you don't install WinZip any zipped files will show up as a folder with a zip across it.
