Question

Is upgrading my laptop worth it?

Aug 15, 2015 2:32PM PDT

I purchased a laptop, an acer aspire series one in 2013. From my research it seems like these laptops were produced sometime in 2009 or 10. It has an i3 processor and 4gb of ram. That being said I have a few questions

1. Will upgrading the ram to 8gb be worth it or should I invest in a newer laptop if I want to extend its life by at least 3 years?

2. Going with the last question, how much longer will it take for DDR3 ram to become obsolete? I dont want to spend the momey upgrading ram if I can possibly buy a laptop with ddr4 ram anytime soon.

3. If I do get an entirely new laptop, which would be the best option: buying a custom unit or a name brand company? Which companies produce the longest lasting laptops?

Installing a new pair of RAM (mixing can be trouble) from Crucial.com could help.

2. It will be obsolete when say the market for it falls to say 20% or less. I think that's years away.

3. My opinion here. Get a ready to ship model. Never customize as you don't get as much for your dollar. For example the office set me up with a 4th gen i7 with 16GB RAM, dual SLI GPUs and more for 999.99 USD. If one customized that, the price could have doubled.
