Question

Is upgrade from Intel i7-2630QM to i7-3630QM possible?

Jan 21, 2015 11:00PM PST

I was wonder if it would be possible to upgrade my current Intel i7-2630QM CPU to the newer 3630QM CPU.
The sockets are the same (FCPGA98Cool for these two CPUs but I have an Intel HM67 Chipset but the 3630QM I think works with the HM77,76 chipsets. Is there any possibility this would be compatible with the older chipset or will it not work at all?

Answer
Rarely.

Mostly because more than the socket, the support chipset and BIOS must support the newer CPU. There are folk that flame out over this. This is not like a desktop machine. The gains look minimal too. (I used CPUBOSS)

Answer
Typically you can upgrade

across generations if an upgrade is possible. Meaning you can't go from sandy bridge to ivy bridge processors. If the processor is up-gradable you should be able to go to a 2000 series processor with a faster clock speed.
