Check with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) to find out for yourself. All patent applications are publicly available, and they're even online these days.

You should be able to do a search for all the patents Microsoft has filed for, and then see if you can find anything like the article described in the results. You could do this from a public library or something if you don't want to have your system online for some reason or another.
