Is this a problem with Vista Ultimate?

Jul 6, 2007 8:43AM PDT

Recently I notice that when I reboot my system with Vista Ultimate, during the CMOS part of the boot process, the screen after the "CD" boot option, the next screen asks me whether I want to boot to Windows Vista. (Vista is the only option so there should be no dual boot operation here.)

I haven't yet waited to see if it would proceed past this screen automatically if I did nothing. Hitting the enter key then boots the system up normally except that it seems to take a long time before the next screen pops up (the colored logo in the center of the screen.)

I've been running Vista on my computer since April with no problems. While I normally run 24/7, I occasionally either shut down or reboot the computer. In the early days of this Vista system (April-May), I don't remember seeing this screen during the boot process.

So, is this normal or an early indication of a coming problem?

You can fix that...

You can safely edit the BCD store through a graphical interface using VistaBootPRO, a free third-party utility. That will let you see what, if any 'hidden' boot option is present and potentially remove it. If nothing else you can adjust the time that screen is displayed to 0 seconds so it just skips right past it, alleviating the annoyance.

Hope this helps,
John

System...
Jul 7, 2007 3:33AM PDT

I installed Vista Ultimate (not upgrade version) on a clean new hard drive which is now my C drive. I do have a copy of XP Pro installed on my D drive which was the previous C drive. Since I don't see myself going back to XP Pro, I guess I could reformat the D drive. I presently use it for backing up my data on my Vista drive C.

As I mentioned at the start of this thread, I haven't had this problem until just recently (perhaps the last 2-3 weeks.) Since I do run my computer 24/7, the only time I see this boot problem is on a reboot.

I did download VistaBootPro, but it's unclear as to how to run the program to correct boot problems.

While it's a bit of a pain, I guess I could open my computer and disconnect the D drive and then see if the same screen comes up while booting.

The screen in question ONLY offers to boot to Vista so one would think the XP Pro boot data on the D drive would NOT be in-play.

For VistaBootPRO...
Jul 7, 2007 1:16PM PDT

Launch it, click the Configure button on the left, select Windows Vista from the drop-down menu as the default OS, change the Boot Timeout to 0 (seconds), and click Apply. That will disable the display of the prompt to 'choose an OS' when you reboot.

Hope this helps,
John

It works, but...

I ran VistaBootPro again and this time reset the timeout to 0. I then rebooted and YES, it did flash by that page even though I saw it for a brief second.

I'm still wondering why this is a problem even though it has effectively been "white-washed".

Do you think I'm getting this page (even very briefly) because XP Pro is on my D drive even though I never boot to it. As I said at the start of this thread, this is a recent occurrence. For over 2 months after installing Vista on a new hard drive, I never saw this page.

I guess I should be happy that it's effectively gone.

Thanks for all the help.

Another Program

If you have trouble with VistaBootPro, easyBCD is more user friendly, the timeout option is under the configure tab.

(It's also better because it will let you add a linux partition to the boot menu... which may not make benifit you, but trust me, that makes it better.)
