General discussion

Is there ever any need for component cables now?

Jul 14, 2009 7:48AM PDT

Samsung LN52B750, surround sound system, Dish HD box.

With all the new sets coming out with HDMI connections is there any need for component cables anymore. I mean if your source like mine will be is a Dish HD box with HDMI outputs.

For some reason I was going to order a set but couldn't remember if it was because of what someone said "here" or what!

No HDMI outs?
Jul 14, 2009 8:33AM PDT

Does that mean you can't record from HDMI cables?

I can't.

Have you found a recorder that does this?

older posting
Jul 14, 2009 8:59AM PDT

I found an older posting (component cables) that stated component cables were better than HDMI. Is there any truth to this? Once again I find mysef getting confused.
Should I be using HDMI or component out of the Dish satellite box?

Sorry I like HDMI cables. Easy to setup, almost fool proof (but you know what they say!)

The HD recorder issue is likely one reason for the comments. Or they have gear that used those cables they paid 99 bucks a set for?

We can only guess why.

If you don't have the HD recorder need, I like HDMI.

Bob how about on screen menues?
Jul 15, 2009 7:58AM PDT

I found this out from the forum but started thinking when I shouldn't probably, LOL!

I have an older Marantz receiver and I want to keep it but gain the new sound formats so a guy hear told me I could do the following:

Hook my DirecTV/Dish network box to the TV with an HDMI and run a Toslink from the Marantz to the DirecTV/Dish network box, that sounds great but it got me wondering about the on screen menues from the Marantz that would need a video connection also the video menues within the new TV. Are the menus all going to work with this setup or: (subscribed to Dish this morning)

Would it be better to run Component video cables to the Marantz from the Dish box and then from the Marantz to the TV and still use the Toslink cable from the Dish box to the Marantz.

Do you get what I mean? I'm worried about loosing the sound and setup menus of the Marantz and the new TV (Samsung LN52750).
I'm trying to get this all straight in my head and without the help of you CNET guys I'm lost, so I really appreciate everyone taking the time to help.

The TV came yesterday from Amazon delivered by a company called CEVA, the guy was awesome, seen that I was hurt so put it right in the house where I wanted it! I have 2 sets of HDMI cables, 1 set of Belkin Component and am waiting on the Toslink cables from Monoprice, so I am just about set with the cables. Dish is doing the install this Sunday July 19.

The maze.
Jul 15, 2009 9:57AM PDT

Sadly the maze is getting worse.

Let me share that I'm real flexible on hookups. I go with what works.

-> To see an issue with running audio through this and there and over that, all you need to read is "the lip sync issue" posts but the sad truth is the reason is deeply technical.

R. Proffitt, I really don't know wht you mean by your statement. I know very little about these things.

That's the issue.

It's getting complex. Above there was some post about running audio from here to there and video over HDMI and here's my warning. Ready?

Don't be surprised if your video and audio play like an old dubbed Kung Fu tape.

Example?

"Lip Sync: Because consumer electronics devices are using increasingly complex digital signal processing to enhance the clarity and detail of the content, synchronization of video and audio in user devices has become a greater challenge and could potentially require complex end-user adjustments. HDMI 1.3 incorporates automatic audio synching capabilities that allows devices to perform this synchronization automatically with total accuracy."

Above the member notes they want to use other connections so you can imagine the maze of options and I brought up the most common complaint. "lip sync"

Exactly which new sound formats?
Jul 16, 2009 1:44AM PDT

Are you referring to lossless (from Blu Ray), or simply Dolby Digital 5.1 content via your DVR/HD sat box(?) Is your older Marantz even capable of 5.1/DTS decoding(?)

cheers,
Pedro

Better? No way.

Maybe for recording..as Robbert pointed out (you can't record from hdmi). But then...I have never seen a recorder with a component input either (at least the 4 that I have used).

Oh I forgot;

I use component with my TV. Reason being the hdtv dvr cable box doesn't work with hdmi connection. Don't know why...they try two with the same results. It might be because I have a 720P TV and that the box only works with hdmi when it's 1080 only? Just guessing.

When HDMI first came out there were some problems.
Jul 15, 2009 1:32AM PDT

But for the most part they have been cleared up.
Dish did have problem with HDMI at first, so I used component cables for awhile. John

I still use them

I use one to connect my Xbox 360 to my receiver since my receiver only has 2 HDMI inputs.

Here's a fact . . .
Jul 15, 2009 10:31AM PDT

Component is analog, HDMI is digital. Component is video only, HDMI is audio and video.

Your choice. Use whatever fits, and provides A/V.

Quality-wise it's a toss up.

am I missing something?

RE:

and

...I mean if your source like mine will be is a Dish HD box with HDMI outputs...

Ok, maybe I'm missing something, or maybe I'm just being too literal, but you've answered your own question, haven't you? "Is there EVER a need for component cables now?" Of course. Simply because everyone on the planet doesn't have a source like yours or a TV like yours. I didn't throw away my perfectly fine DVD player when HD came out. I have five TVs in my house. Yes, I have a nice new flat screen and a blu-ray player, but I also have an old tube TV with a converter box and from room to room, everything in between. From the cable company, I have and HD converter box, two standard def cable boxes and three simpler converter boxes as well as two Tivos, one of which is HD. Are you suggesting that I go out and spend $10,000 to $20,000 on new TVs and an extra $100/month for cable boxes just so I don't have to use analog cables any more? I really don't need HD on my small kitchen TV. If you're specifically referring to analog HD cables, then the same still applies. Not everyone has the latest equipment or an infinitely large pocketbook.
