Is there any way to retrive an old e-mail?

Jul 5, 2007 11:42AM PDT

After reading an e-mail that I don't write back to right away I always make sure to keep it in my mailbox as new and save it also. I just lost an e-mail from someone I hadn't talked to in quite some time. It turns out I didn't save it and AOL deleted it. Is there any way to get it back? I have already checked the old mail and recently deleted mail folders.

I don't know exactly how AOL works, so... If the mail is stored on your system, then there's at least a possibility it's still there. It won't be easy to find, but MOST email programs use the MBOX format for email, which is basically just a big text file. All messages stay in there, even after being deleted, until cleared out by doing something like running a folder compression command.

If the mail is stored on AOL's systems, it's gone. There might be ways to retrieve it, IF you could get the help of some AOL admin, but the odds of that happening are basically none.

Typically if you used a web browser to access your mail when it is deleted only a restore from backup by the isp an retrieve it. If you used outlook/OE. It could be on your hard drive but scrambled. A disk recovery shop could probably get it back.
