is there a way to reset bios w/o hurting the computer?

by el_dub04 / March 30, 2004 2:56 AM PST

we have an old pc that we need data off of but need to attach a zip drive to retrieve the data, but a password was placed on cmos/bios and i am unable to crack it. is there a way i could jump the motherboard and still keep the date on my hard drive so i could get into cmos to install the drive? (this computer is OLD...win 95 so no automatic install stuff here). Thanks !

I've never "hurt" a machine by moving the reset jumper.

I might have to setup the bios values (date, time, drive type) again, but little else.

Sometimes just removing the battery will do the trick, if it can be done easily. Some M/B have jumpers for specifically resetting the cmos (BIOS).

Ciao.
