Question

Is there a maximum length for cable between router and modem

Aug 2, 2014 5:45AM PDT

Is there a maximum length of internet cable between cable modem and router? Are there positives/negatives of short/long cable? Can you place a cable modem in one room and router in another room connected via in wall connection?

I know of inconveniences of not having both near each other in case of reboots but I am ok with that. I am using cat 6 cable.

I have a perfect place for cable modem in a closet with a cable outlet for the cable modem but having the router in that same closet is not ideal due to location and not reaching whole house. I would like to run a cat 6 from cable modem in closet to the router in a better location in house but I can't find any information on maximum cable length between modem and router.

Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

Sure, but while it's well known.

100 Meters is the typical max length HOWEVER there are those that have gone well beyond that distance. Under the right conditions I'm sure it can go more than triple that.

as a slight barrier so its smart you don't put it in the closet.

Length not an issue

As far as leaving the modem in a closet then I wouldn't worry too much. You are probably quite happy keeping your mobile in your pocket while it checks for emails during the day?

The wireless router as you suggest is not best suited for closet work due to wireless signals, Bob has already mentioned that the wire length does not matter ( to an extent that wont bother you )

Anything you can do to get the actual router in the best possible condition for wireless is a bonus.
