Question

Is there a fix for dvd drives that disappear?

Dec 18, 2013 10:46AM PST

Upgraded Sony VAIO from Vista to Windows 7, DVD drive no longer appears. Went to the Device Manager and the following message appears:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

Tried to update the driver to no avail. Are there any other solutions?

Did you get the Windows 7 driver from Sony?

If you got the driver from anywhere other than Sony, that could be your problem.

What shows up in Device Manager? As another poster stated, chances are it is a driver issue, likely a download from Sony's site. First look in Device Manger, see what shows (if at all) for the drive, if it is shown and shown with an error, usually a yellow question mark or asterisk, see if windows will load a driver, usually right click on icon and go from there. IF the drive is not shown in the Device manager list, then it is off to Sony's site to attempt a download.

Windows 7 Code 19 finds the usual. If you install incompatible apps you can get most machines to get to the Code 19 issue.

It's rather well done with thousands of web pages about it.
