General discussion

Is there a camcorder that can bypass built in michrophone?

Dec 20, 2005 3:20AM PST

I wish to make videos using sound input from a mixer and pre recorded accompaniment, but sing live with it.
I have not seen any Camcorders in the $600.00 price range that have an aux sound input that bypasses ins the built in mic. Do I have to spend thousands to get this feature?
Thank you. Quiet Bear

Or you can do this in post production.

Many will record this with other mics and audio recorders then mix it up when they create the DVD.

Any Brand / model that you can recommend?

Bob: Thank you for replying.
I want to record myself singing live to a prerecorded Backing track that I have previously created in my studio. Lip Synching is NOT an option.
I am an experienced musician both electronic and acoustic, but this is my first foray into the digital video side.
I use Sonar, which has the ability to input video tracks for post production work, but I do need to film myself singing live.
Can you recommend any brands / models? I don't seem to find any new camcorders that have an aux or michrophone bypass input jack.

Some Sony and JVC models and find the mic input jacks on them. I wonder if you are not in the US and that's why you didn't find such models. I also saw such inputs on the camcorders at best buy.

Why is another audio recorder and post production not an option? I didn't write "lip sync" but noted that many will setup some 20 odd microphones into various audio recorders and then pack all that up and head to post production for the best video.

Mic inputs

Bob: I'm "kinda" in the US. I live in South Florida.
I'm trying to make a Demo of me singing to my prerecorded Background. The Lip sync term was mine.
It is necessary to be singing live in this case. I will be both singing and playing various horns live to my backup mix. This video will go to an agent who books various entertainment venues in the area.
I have checked a few stores in the area, perhaps I need to check a few more, probably dedicated camera stores. Thank you, Quiet Bear

Some of the US is now much like a 3rd world country.

Merry Christmas.

They all used to have an input that overrode the mic.

You might want to look for an older camera on eBay which has this facility. Frankly, I think the camera is close to worthless without this ability.

Any brand / model that has a mic input jack.

Thank you for replying.
Can you think of any brand / model that might have this ability to record with an external mic or line in.
I am an experienced musician, electronic and acoustic. I now want to do some video projects with me singing live, along with backup tracks that I have created.
Lip synching is NOT an option.

My Sony, bought on eBay has this. I have also used a Canon

that had this. I can't tell you the model for at least a week, but I think the Sony is a TRV17. I think the no mic setup must be fairly new, so I'ld look for a camera which is 1-2 years old. Be sure to check the camera specs, or ask the seller if it has a mic or AV input. The more recent models all had AV ports which requires a special adaptor, but it does work. I was quite surprised when I checked Bestbuy recently, and nothing had external inputs.

You might also check the Sony HD cameras. They might have then.
