how about the cowon i audio 7 it can play podcasts without conversion(i think) if not you only have to run it through one bit of software. one thing that doesn't go with your specs is that it doesn't run on normal batteries, but it has an incredible battery life. 60 HOURS!!!!!! if you have a 60 hour bus ride you're going to have to spend $50 on batteries anyway let me know if you have any questions
I read a review of the new Creative Zen V Plus 4GB player, which sounded golden - until I got to the part where it stated that you've got to use Windows Media Player (or Woeful Major Pain?) to get files to it. Is that really true?
I use Total Commander for all file management, including moving music and other audio to my player, and my podcatcher (PodBreeze, http://podbreeze.wordpress.com) stores the podcasts right on my current player (a Sandisk m250 2GB). And that's the way I want it to be - I simply won't buy a player that forces me to use special software (or WMP) to access it - Mass Storage Compatible (MSC) is a must for me.
So, if the Creative is out, what should I get? My absolute requirements are:
- The player must be able to do MSC - no special software required to add media to it
- It should be at least 4GB, and flash-based
- Bookmarking so that it starts at the place I left it, even after a battery change. Preferrably also after being connected to the computer and getting new content (my Sansa doesn't do the latter, it simply starts over whenever it gets new content)
- Removable standard battery, AAA or similar, that can be charged in a regular charger. I need to be able to change batteries on the bus, at the beach or wherever I'm at
It would be a plus if it had good support for playlists. My Sansa has terrible playlist support when used in MSC mode, which makes it hard to separate podcasts from music. I let my podcatcher assign all downloaded podcast episodes a special genre, so listening to podcasts only is OK (by selecting that genre), but the problem is listening to music only - my music isn't one genre...
Another plus would be good fast forward/reverse. My previous players (both MuVo's, 128MB and 256MB) had a wonderful feature where they speeded up the movement through the audio file more and more the longer you held the button. Fast-forwarding to the middle or end of a 2 hour podcast is a pain with my Sansa, which has one speed only.
Finally, if it does video, it'd be good if it did useful video, since re-encoding video isn't one of my hobbies. All my video comes in some QUicktime format or other (video podcasts), so support for that'd be great.
