General discussion

Is the LCD 630 series a 650 with Matte or a 550 with 120Mhz?

Sep 3, 2008 8:21AM PDT

I am looking at the 650, 550 and 630 series of 40" LCD's

I'm interested most in the 630 series but I wondered if anyone knew whether it was basically a 550 series (8bit panel) with 120MHZ/AMP added.

Or whether it is a 650 panel (10bit) with a matte screen instead of the 'glossy' screen.

If someone from Samsung could clarify that would be very helpful

Thanks

A quick side by side
Sep 4, 2008 4:18PM PDT

tolpax,

No problem. Here the differences between the units.

The LNxxA550 is a matte panel 1080p panel with 3 HDMI inputs. 30,000:1 DCR
The LNxxA630 is also matte, 1080p, but adds Touch of Color and 120Hz. 40,000:1 DCR
The LNxxA650 is the SuperClear Panel design, is 1080p, Touch of Color, 120Hz 50,000:1 DCR and adds the InfoLink capabilities. It also adds an additional HDMI port.

There are other differences, but I think this is what you?re looking for specifically.

Regards,

Mr. Samsung.

So in short the 630 is based on the 550 rather than the 650? (the numbering had me confused) Happy

Thanks for the prompt response.

no - it's the 6 series.
Sep 8, 2008 2:18PM PDT

Tolpax,

The 630 is part of the 6-Series, but without the SuperClear Panel. It's not based on the 550. It's a member of the 6 series without a feature or two that the 650 has.

Happy to help

Disinformation............
Sep 9, 2008 2:49AM PDT

So this information is incorrect (sorry to flog a dead horse here)

For all of those wondering if the 630 has the same internal processor as the 650/750....it does NOT. I did a little research, and have found that while the 650/750/850/860/950 all have digital natural image enhancer (DNIE) PRO, the 630 and 550 only have regular DNIE, not the pro/updated version. I did a little further research to see if I could find the difference between the two versions of DNIE, and found out that sets with DNIE PRO have better video processing that plain old DNIE.

With this information, I feel comfortable saying that the 630 is most definitely a 550 with 120 hz and AMP rather than a 650 with a semi-matte screen.

Usual internet chatter........ (BTW I did purchased the 630) Happy

quotes would help
Sep 9, 2008 12:15PM PDT

Sorry missed the "" off a large part of my post which I appreciate made it incomprehensible....

Lets try again.....

This is a quote I found on another board... (from a user not Samsung)

"For all of those wondering if the 630 has the same internal processor as the 650/750....it does NOT. I did a little research, and have found that while the 650/750/850/860/950 all have digital natural image enhancer (DNIE) PRO, the 630 and 550 only have regular DNIE, not the pro/updated version. With this information, I feel comfortable saying that the 630 is most definitely a 550 with 120 hz and AMP rather than a 650 with a semi-matte screen. "

I was just wondering whether it was accurate.

Hope this is better

Interesting logic but not true
Sep 11, 2008 9:50AM PDT

Tolpax -

The LNxxA630 most certainly belongs in the 6-Series. I can see how he?s using logic to draw a conclusion, but as I mentioned in another post, the 630 is NOT the same panel as the 550. It can?t be if the refresh rate is higher. That?s inherent to the panel. So it's hard to say that the 650 is the 550 with some features added.

follow-up query re a630?
Sep 6, 2008 1:03AM PDT

Mr. Samsung, two follow-ups on the a630. This has been the subject of much speculation on other Internet boards:

1) Does the a630 have an 8-bit panel like the 550 series or a 10-bit panel like the a650?

2) In your view, is the difference between the glossy screen on the a650 and the matte screen on the a630 simply one of how they treat reflective light, or does one have better picture quality than the other? For example, if the a650 and a630 were both displayed in a dark room with no light, would there be a substantive difference in the colors and blacks between the two sets?

Thx much.

Don't you just love internet speculation? :)

Jetsfan1,

I'm pretty sure the 630 is a 10-pit panel but I'm having trouble confirming that for you because it?s not a spec that Samsung officially lists. If you have ?confirmation? from another source, okay, but we do not confirm or deny the panel bit depth in our 2008 LCD lineup online or elsewhere (as far as I can see). I'm sure the 630 is NOT the same panel as the 550. It can?t be if the refresh rate is higher. That?s inherent to the panel.

Two: The specifications differentiate 10,000:1 contrast ratio, so you?ll get more colors. Using your example of both sets being in a dark room, yes there would be a difference between the colors and black levels. Exactly how noticeable, again, depends on the individual.

Mr. Samsung

(side note - I'm picking Keller to score the first touchdown against the Pats this weekend. I know - long shot - but I think that kid is going to break out in this weekend's game.)

thx for the reply
Sep 9, 2008 8:48PM PDT

I hesitated buying the 40a630 when it first came out because, as a brand new model, it had no user reviews on boards that I typically rely on, such as Circuit City, CNET, and Amazon. While waiting for such reviews, I allowed myself to be sucked into this ridiculously technical (and likely irrelevant) debate re the internal mechanisms in these various Samsung models. Bottom line, I am trying to figure out if the a630 is worth the extra cost over the a550. I watch a lot of live sports, which makes me think the 120 mz is worth having, but I'm not sure it's not a marketing gimmick. In the end, I guess I'll just trust my eyeballs in comparing the sets in a showroom. Thx for your help, any additional buying advice you can offer is welcome.

Oh, and I think Keller will be a big contributor eventually, but I'm trying to allow him to ease into the offense without raising expectations, at least this early. Jet fans often either see the glass as completely full or empty. Happy

Thx again.

Does 650 have DNIe or DNIe PRO?
Dec 16, 2008 4:08AM PST

Is the 750 the only one with Pro? or did Samsung just misprint it on the website? What is that difference between pro and regular?
