For outdoor daytime sports, it will do very well.
When you get into indoor or lowlight situations, there are limitations (for all cameras).

That camera has a 10X zoom which is great for long shots, but you have to know the limitations of a "long" lens.
The further out you zoom, the mores sensitive the camera is to movement. At 10X zoom, any camera movement is multiplied 10 times. Use a tripod, whenever possible.
If you cannot use a tripod, improvise:
...Use the viewfinder instead of the LCD to frame your shots. Your head is steadier than two outstreatched arms.
...Lean your shoulder against a building, post, tree, etc to further steady yourself.
