Is Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55P Right For Me?

I have researched various sites to figure out what digital compact camera to buy and am more confused than ever. I?m replacing my Mavica 3 megapixel and this will be only the 2nd digital I?ve ever had. I think I want a 8 megapixel with SD card, lithium battery with optical zoom better than 3X if possible and 3? LCD. Viewfinder not important. The look and feel of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55P is what I have settled on so far. My hand is able to grip it well. And the price is right - $179. My subject would usually be cityscapes, museums, landscapes with an occasional flower for vacation trips. Mostly daylight. Would this camera fit the subject matter or can someone suggest a comparable or better camera.

I love Panasonic mega-zoom cameras. The Lumix FZ18 is my current camera of choice. However, most panasonic ultra-compacts tend to be pretty lousy. I would check out canon ultra-portables such as the digital elph sd750 or sd1000. They have a lower megapixel count (7.1), but they will take clearer pictures. They also have a lot of scene and color modes that are fun to play with. My girlfriend loves the sd1000 I bought her. Hope this helps.

I could not find any official reviews on the FX55, but finally noticed that the FX01 uses the exact same lens.
So the photo results are going to be about the same.

Here is a comparison of the two cameras:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=panasonic_dmcfx01%2Cpanasonic_dmcfx55&show=all

There is a review on the FX01 and sample photos.
Just click the green link just under the photo of the FX01.

The FX01 received a very good overall rating.

..........

One small point:
The FX01 and FX55 have a wide angle lens (28mm).
Even though they have a specification of 3.6X, you will find that they only have a reach of 3X when compared to a camera with a 35mm lens.

3.6 x 28mm = 100.8mm
3.0 x 35mm = 105.0mm

I suggest you read the review of the FX01; it shows what the wide angle lens offers.
You may or may not need a wide angle lens.
