General discussion

Is now a good time to buy a laptop?

Oct 5, 2009 12:40AM PDT

With Windows 7 arriving soon, do you think retailers will be lowering prices on their Vista laptops? I've already seen several retailers offering free Windows 7 upgrades on Vista machines, so it would seem like the way to go if the Vista machines can be had for less.

No thinking was needed.

I'm seeing clearance sales now. But you have to go shopping to find what is where you are.

Thanks.

I wanted to make sure the prices I'm seeing are indeed good prices. They seem to be from what I've found on the net. Thanks.

In that there is a problem.

There will always be a better deal. It's a rule. Let's try this.

Can you do without? Wait.

But what I'm seeing is some clearance sales as they make ready for the 22nd.

Microsoft has given manufacturers the ok

to begin selling the machines with windows 7 preinstalled a week ahead of the retail release. So you better hurry to get the discount.

Might be just the time...

Could be that now is just the right time to buy a laptop with Vista and an upgrade voucher. You get a system with a (fairly) stable system (Vista) that you can upgrade for basically shipping costs to 7 later on and if you don't like it, you have a fallback.

Will it be cheaper after 7 ships? I think it's one of those laws of IT - The price drops the week after you get your new purchase home!

Your decision is "need" versus "want" and I'm not going there!

Be wary

Personally I would NOT buy a computer with the intentions of upgrading the OS. I have heard about (and experienced) nothing but problems with doing that. If you want Windows 7, I would wait. If Vista is OK for you then get it now.

and I have upgraded to Windows 7. The biggest advantage to waiting is the system will be clean. My system started booting slower when I installed Acronis True Image and it still does it in Windows 7.

I'd prefer to wait.

How about this?

Thanks for the advice about waiting. I stopped in at Best Buy yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to find a new Windows7 laptop with the same components I had been looking for (Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB Ram) for cheaper than the Vista laptops I had been looking at before.
So, new question. Is this (below) as good a deal as it seems, or should I continue waiting? FYI, I'm looking to spend around $600 and my current laptop is dead at the moment. So I kinda do "need" a new one soon, and probably can't afford any of the super-cool new Windows7 machines.
Thanks.

I am typing on a 2.0GB Core 2 Duo, DDR3 RAM and 4500MHD based machine. All I can tell you is it is awesome. And you'll be on 7.

Love Hewlett Packards!
Oct 30, 2009 10:30AM PDT

I love this laptop! It's just like the one I had, but it was recently stolen. The only thing that I didn't like was the computer was very heavy, but it has everything that I wanted in a laptop. Does anyone know of a laptop that has all of this but lighter weight?

just got my dv6
Oct 30, 2009 11:32PM PDT

Still getting used to the new keyboard. Almost wished I sprung for the dv6t but I think I'll be ok in a week. Weight is listed in reviews but the only thing is the model I have is a little high end so the fans do run and run. Some want silent so those people need to steer clear of the ATI and Nvidia solutions and find the Intel 4500 solution.
