Is my HardDrive lost?

I had a Hard Drive with WinXP (NTFS) and it worked perfectly... now that I try to boot it starts OK, the WinXP logo stays on the screen longer than it uses to stay... after a while the HD starts making a weird sound, like if it was trying to read a sector and it can?t and tries one time after another... it stays like that so I have to turn it off.
I connected this HD as a slave on another new HD, the OS knew that it had a slave HD, but when I tried to access it the computer freezes(sp?) so I have to restart, I tried running scandisk to check for errors but I also freezes. Also, Partition Magic can?t make a backup partition because it also freezes.

What can I do?
Any help will be really appreciated!

This may be the test of your backup system.

I already have a new HD, I just need to get out some of my files that had not been backed up!
By the way, what do you mean by "the test of your backup system"?

The test of a backup system is to take a persons hard disk away and put a blank hard disk in. It's painful, but can find what they didn't backup or if they backed up and didn't have a way to restore.

At this point you'll need to look at drive data recovery service as the hard sounds like it's failed. Typical names are and
