Is my hard drive dead?

by ixwarfare / July 26, 2009 2:47 PM PDT

So my old dell desktop died and i decided to use the hard drive from that and put it into a hard drive enclosure and use it as an external hard drive.. The HD is a Western Digital WD3200JS and the hard drive enclosure is from Central Computers.

Now to the problem. When I turn the adapter, the light comes on but only for a second and I can hear it start up. Then the light comes back on but turns off again, while still making the start up sounds. finally it comes back on one last time before turning off again.

I tried turning one the adapter without the hard drive and it started up perfectly, so its not like the adapter is broken. The only problem is when the hard drive is connected to the adapter.

Is my hard drive dead or is there something that can be done?

Sorry about the typos.

"When I turn the adapter" should be "When I turn ON the adpater" and "I tried turning one the adapter" should be "I tried turning ON the adapter".

Western Digital Hard drive failure

Sounds like it could be a problem with the printed circuit board. (failure with the electronics) It would be best to send in the drive to have it evaluated by a data recovery company, if the data holds any value. You can send it to http://datanalyzers.com and receive a free evaluation.
