General discussion

is my cd-r drive toast??

Jul 4, 2005 2:52PM PDT

I have a HP 8772C,
Windowx XP home sp2 / Linux Mandrake dual-boot system. Yes I know it's getting old, almost ready for retirement. OH, and I doubled the ram and added a second hard drive maybe 2 yrs ago, if that makes any difference.

my cd-r drive is a Mitsumi CR-4804TE.

When I try to use the cd-r drive, either to burn a disk or listen to a cd, sometimes the drive door won't even open. Other times, after I put in a cd, it whistles and whirs and spins forever, sometimes for more than half an hour. Then, if I'm trying to burn a disk, (I use musicmatch jukebox 8 for this) then it says the burn failed before it barely started, and ejects the cd.

Do I need a new drive, or can it be fixed, or do I just need to clean it? If it's a new drive that I need then I'll probably just get a new computer.

Thanks for any advice...

Old Adaptec or Roxio DirectCD software. You didn't tell so all I can do is note this. The drive can be toast since they are only good for a few years and the good news is the drives are cheap....
