Question

Is my cable modem going out?

Nov 28, 2015 12:52PM PST

Or is it something else? Motorola Surfboard SB6141, recommended by Time Warner Cable. Had it for a couple of years. From time to time I notice that my internet speed is very slow. So I turn off the computer, unplug the cable modem for a minute, plug it back in, wait for all the lights to come back on, turn the computer back on, run a speed test, and everything is back to normal. This happens two or three times a month.

Windows 10, all updates, virus scans done with windows defender – never find anything. On occasion I download and run a different anti-virus program, I'll run Adwcleaner, and sometimes I also download and run malwarebytes anti-malware. Nothing is found. Also run Ccleaner from time to time. Using Firefox mostly.

Any suggestions,

Thanks in advance

Clarification Request
Does this happen only when it rains?

Or all sorts of weather?

Sorry - can't see this as being normal

Problem seemed to only show itself recently, maybe within the last four months. I've been using a computer for a long time and while this has occurred in the past, not with this frequency. By the way, I did replace the cables going to the modem a while back. If this were a Time Warner issue, you would think that by me shutting down and restarting the cable modem, this would not resolve the issue, but it does, instantly. I also have Time Warner phone service and it has continued to work fine during those times. Same cable coming out of the wall going to cable modem and phone modem. I don't really think this has anything to do with the upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 although I did upgrade in July like I'm sure a lot of people did. FYI, Windows 10 seems to be working fine.

Thanks for replying, will continue to look for a solution.

not totally true

sometimes when the cable company work on lines, switches and such in the area, it can affect some modems so you would have to do a power cycle.

which reminds me, do you have many splitters on your lines? splitters tend to get old and should be replace regularly and if you have too many you could have problems such as you are having.

There is one splitter

Wall outlet to splitter to cable modem and phone modem. Easy enough to replace will give that a try, thanks. On a related issue, went to Dell website a couple of days ago and downloaded, what I assume to be a new software "network adapter". Could be something.

We'll see.

Thanks again for replying

Answer
a lot of things can cause this

It is just something you would not know unless you try another. There are so many things that could cause the problem. sometimes it is on your end, sometimes it is on the cable companies end. You can call the cable company have have them check the lines to you. Also you should check all connected cables. if they are old, replace them.
