Is my 9800 pro working properly?

I just upgraded my computer to p4 3.0 with 512 ddr266 ram in a case with 400 watt power supply. I brought a 9800pro because of its reputation but when I play doom3 the automatic settings put it to medium quality at 640x480. If I set it any higher it gets a little jerky, is this due to my ram letting me down or is the card not working as well as it should???
