Question

Is it worth fixing our 10 year old Sony Wega 50"

Aug 31, 2013 12:33PM PDT

Is it worth fixing our 9 year old Sony Wega 50" TV.
The repairman is coming out on Thursday. We have blue spots on our TV that looks like a galaxy. sometimes yellow spots. He said it was the light engine or optical block and may cost $600.00. He said our TV would be worth fixing and would last another 10 years...
But for just a few more $'s we could have a new Samsung or LG...not sure what to do..please advise Thanks.

Answer
I'd go for the new LG

My 47" LG is almost 3 years old, and I haven't had the first problem of any kind with it. It gets as good a picture as any TV I've seen. If your TV hasn't lasted 9 years since it was new, it doesn't strike me as realistic to think it would last another 10. That would make it 19 years old, I have trouble considering that credible.

Harder to estimate than a car.

This area is really tough to estimate. At 600 you can get a new set and most likely save bucks each month on energy use as the new sets draw less than DLPs.

If you decide to not repair, disposal is often a hard issue. If you want to see how little the set is worth, all the service folk will not take your dead set away for free. They don't want them either.

Answer
not really

I bet he did. He could probably pick the part up cheap on such an old set.A set that old would be worth very little even in full working order. Treat yourself to a new one.

Just a trip back in the time machine.

I was out and about and happened across a tv repair shop. They had dozens of RPTVs for cheap and a cranky person (employee?) grumbling they had been there for over a year.
