There were a few that wanted 4K gaming in a laptop and what you noted would have the buyer exploding as they saw mid teen frame rates (14 to 19?)
The 980 is top of the game but BATTERY time is reduced on such things. Portable is possible even at 17 or 18 inches. But for a student we advice 12 to 15 inch models so they stand a chance of getting 2 or more years.
-> Wait? Always, if you can.

Hi guys, I am in the market for a new gaming laptop the few I have been looking at is the aorus x7 pro with 970 sli and the alienware 15 with the gtx980. I am just wanting to know is it worth buying now or waiting for the new broadwell CPUs or new nvidia gpus to be released? Is it a little late to purchase these laptops with this hardware now? I am looking for gaming laptops with slightly portable factor with at least a gtx 980 with good browsing battery life if needed that's why the alienware appealed to me. Any help and opinions would be awesome, cheers.
