Question

Is it wise to get Protection Insurance on my Samsung JU7100

Jul 30, 2015 7:36AM PDT

CNET...What do you think??
I just purchased a Samsung Ju7100 UHD TV 55 4k. It is our first flat screen TV) It has warranty for one year. Is it wise purchase insurance on it. It covers everything except for cosmetic issues. Insurance will start one year later. These are the prices
3 years $365.49
2 years $257.99
1 year $143.33
5 years 573.32
If so which one is worth getting? Or you don't feel you need insurance?

Answer
It's like any insurance.

You are paying for same thing. But here's the rub. READ THE FINE PRINT. Is it Samsung doing the work and how do they handle it when no parts or worse?

One warranty only offered a refund of the warranty fee if they could not have the item repaired. That's not helpful.

I was told by Samsung if there were no parts available to repair the TV ..they would replace the tv with the same one or they would give the price of a new TV (no depreciation).

Hard to sell me on it.

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN55JU7100-55-Inch-Ultra-Smart/dp/B00T48CVVK has it for just under 1,600. So the added 1 year warranty would be my choice. That should cover the infant mortality time span.

While you are at it, ask if the warranty covers SOFTWARE issues. Recently folk flamed me over Revo's exit from the program guide on Sony and Samsung. Neither Sony or Samsung have replaced this app.

So ask the hard question. Does the warranty cover software titles?

I called Samsung re software
Aug 6, 2015 8:02AM PDT

No it doesn't ! It only covers functional aspects of the TV. I called.. As for the downloading of apps (software) (which I am knew at) if the app we downloaded has an
issue it will then notify us to download it again and if there are any bugs the TV will tell you to reinstall to debug it. I'm sorry I really don't understand too much about certain things for a smart TV but I am learning. And I appreciate every ones advice & tips.

This just in. Something's up with Amazon Prime app.

So let's say you get this for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and those other companies move on. The apps die. Are you OK with that?

This has already happened. Folks are getting upset over a few year old TV or BluRay player that Netflix and Samsung have decided to not update and the apps die.

Reloading is not fixing such things. If you go in knowing the apps and smart part of the TV is not going to be supported in just a few years, you'll be OK.
