As to the sync speed there are too many factors here. Your post didn't offer any details for members to comment on.

I've got a 30GB Zune and it runs pretty slow and syncs even slower. I wanted to see if it were possible to defrag it.

I heard Tom say something about defragging an Ipod so I thought it would be about the same for a Zune. Guess not.
Honestly I think it is just the Zune software that gets a little sketchy when trying to sync. Sometimes it will just get stuck at a certain percentage. Especially if I'm running Firefox or Bittorrent.
I find it helps though to close the Zune software and reopen it and the sync picks back up where it left off and goes twice as fast.
This goes for video and podcast syncs mainly.
I just stuck 4gigs of ram into my computer hoping that this would help the problem but so far its remained basically the same.
That points to other than Zune issues. But those P2P softwares is where I can't help you. The issues are more than I want to deal with. My answer is now "don't do that."
