Was use those USB floppy drives. In your case the floppy controller which is on the motherboard could have failed. If you had disabled the drive, it would not light up.
Sadly expensive to fix which is why I went with the alternative.

I have a Dell Inspiron older model. I am wondering if it is possible that I have disabled the 3- 1/2" floppy drive. I am running windows xp home edition. I can see the floppy in "my computer", the drive lights up when called but it does not read any floppys. It doesn't see that there is a floppy in the drive. I ordered a new one and installed but have the same result. Don't know what I did. It was working fine and the next minute it wasn't. I think it was something that I did, but not sure what that may have been.
