I have not had teh time to read all the posts - but if it is a laptop, teh power settings may provide for processor slowdown, depending on power level.
there are a large number of other processes and services taht may be running eg OSA.exe, findfast.exe, fax services, realplayer, winamp, spyware, etc etc etc... an expert may be able to help. There have been occasional articles in PC World telling u what can be deleted. a handy utility is msconfig.exe from win98 taht allows u to prevent many junk apps from starting.
