Is Firefox is as powerful as Chrome these days?

Jul 21, 2013 4:56PM PDT

I love Firefox and most people who love Open source loves Firefox. These days when I say to most people that use firefox not chrome they say chrome is way better than firefox. I disagree with that but sometimes I get doubt that is firefox as good and powerful as chrome? What do you think?

You will get a range of different opinions

Mine is that while I have both FF and Chrome installed, I still tend to use FF exclusively and only use Chrome rarely.

As to which is more powerful, that's a difficult question to ask. What do you mean by powerful? For myself FF does everything that I ask it to do with the add-ons I have. I assume there is a feeling that FF is still a memory hog, but with my 4 GB of RAM I still have plenty remaining if that is the case.

That said, I do use Chrome on occasion and have no complaints about it. It is just a matter of personal preference to me to use FF.

Firefox is a really a memory hog...

I agree with you but using FF on an older computer is painstaking... It really eats up the memory... So I think that chrome is better on these older computers but anyway FF is more cool than chrome.. Cool

Chrome is less likely to freeze on my computer...

but I still will use Firefox for two main reasons:

1. FF alllows me to tweak the UI much much more than Chrome does. Google makes the UI decision and forces you to live with it.

2. FF has a very strong user community of people who will work out problems. Chrome has only the pathetic Google Groups for Chrome where most of the threads with more than one post are others posting that they have the same problem..... with never an answer from someone with a solution.

The best combination, I've told myself for years, has been another tech company adopting the Chrome browser but providing support for it. Recently Opera has tried this, with version 15 and 16. Unfortunately, its still in near-alpha stage (bookmarks not yet natively supported). But this is definitely a project I'm going to keep an eye on.

Yeah I think Opera is doing a good job. Opera is dedicated to the work is does... Happy

They're both great and not-so-perfect in different ways

If by "powerful," do you mean which browser is faster? Chrome wins. On my older computer, Chrome is noticeably faster. On a newer computer with a faster Internet connection, the difference is most likely negligible. If by "powerful," do you mean ability to customize, including the number of available extensions? Firefox wins.

I prefer the speed and interface of Chrome. However, some major websites that work well with Firefox are still not optimized for Chrome. For example, I have to use Firefox to view credit card statements on my bank's site and to print recipes from my favorite recipe site. Strange and surprising, considering the growing popularity of Chrome.
