Is AVG still running as a service?

by burfordz / December 3, 2009 11:48 AM PST

Does AVG still run as a service? Running as a service doesn't bother me as much as the fact that I could not pause or stop the service when I wanted to. This is unacceptable.

AVG has to be run as a service?
by burfordz / December 7, 2009 10:04 AM PST
In reply to: Yes

My question wasn't whether it ran just fine or not. It was whether I could turn off the service when I wanted to. I had to completely uninstall AVG to turn off the service. I use other spyware that can run from console, not as a service.

Only unstoppable version in paid version of AVG is avg watch dog service. This service monitors the function of other AVG parts and is not stoppable manually due to security reasons.

All the components of AVG can be disabled via main interface.

Stopping AVG service to format disks
by JeffreyGNolan / January 6, 2010 8:18 AM PST

Dusan_AVG: Running 9.0 I have not been able to format existing external hard drives or to initialize new drives. The error says to quit utilities or programs using the drive. I've been unable to stop all AVG services from the main menu. Any ideas to help with this?

Please disable all AVG components via UI.
Afterwards please locate this file:
C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG9\avgchsvx.exe
Can also be named avgchsva.exe on 64bit system.

Rename the file and restart the computer.
If it still doesnt help please tell us if you are using any other security software.

THANKS - disk formating fix worked

The fix WORKED and I am now able to format external drives - THANKS!

I'm still unable to initialize a new GTech G 1T external drive that came formatted for Mac. The XP Disk Management/Right Click/Initialize
command does not appear on the menu. Might that be related or is it likely another cause?

from my point of view AVG should have no impact on not initialized hard drives, so this will be probably some other reason than AVG.

Else the previous issue is caused by usage of AVG cache server function on hard drives using windows file systems (NTFS) and connected during start up of computer.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
