Is a dvd+r/rw player necessary?

Dec 28, 2004 1:07PM PST

I realise that most HTIB's with dvd players play only the dvd-r/rw format. When people burn dvd's is the most common media dvd+r media or dvd-r media? If I want a good all round player that plays most dvd formats is the dvd+r format needed. Any replies are appreiated

Everyone will have different needs, and those needs will change as time goes on. Most new DVD players support DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, VCD, CD and more, so I would suggest getting one that supports as many formats as possible.

This article explains the diff between +r and -r.

cdfreks article explains it all in a basic way, with enuff info to get started.

There really is no well defined, you must do this or that, as dvd-r disc from one brand may play well and another brand wont play just get error on stand alone dvd player. Same with dvd+r.

DVD production is nothing like cd.

If there is a certain model stand alone player you just have to have, research that model at videohelp.com. They have a good list of players and what discs, burner and -r or +r compatability.

There is definetly a learning curve here, but not to hard. Google will help you find the specific answers as will those sites I listed.

I just made it to easy by buying that sony player i listed.

I would suggest either of these three brands of burners....

1. Pioneer
2. NEC
3. BenQ

Might as well get a dual layer burner, price is no different. The media should be more readily available soon, and prices will drop. In the meantime, you can still use dvd5, single layer discs.

Newegg has the pioneer 108XL, retail, with a very good suite of burning software bundled.

This is volunteer help, you have been provided the links, its really up to you to dive in.
