Question

Is 32GB enough storage space on a laptop with W10

Apr 14, 2016 5:15AM PDT

Hello
I wish to purchase a small inexpensive laptop (screen size around 10" or 11") for use when I travel just to check emails, check some web sites and do some work using Garmin Mapsource) so I will probably only install a few applications such as Mozilla Firefox (uses around 112Mb) , Open Office (not sure how much storage space required) and Garmin Mapsource with a map (uses around 2Gb storage space).

The entry level laptops with small screen have just 32GB of storage space.
Not sure how much space Windows 10 uses (I am using W7 on my desktop PC)).

I need to know if what I want to install will leave a few GB of storage space (I have no idea how much space W10 uses).

Should I forget about 32GB and go for a laptop with 64GB storage space.

Thanks

John

Answer
I use linux for that

Installed it's about 8GB in size. I often boot not from HDD but from USB flashdrive and it's a LIVE Linux version with persistence set up and only uses 2GB for the OS and the rest of it's left for data, also from a USB flashdrive I put on my keychain. If someone stole the laptop, they get one with no HDD and I retain all my data on my keychain flash drive.

If you want to run Windows, it will take more room. If you want to save data, why not put that on a keychain flashdrive? You can also use bit locker or truecrypt to have the flashdrive encrypted, which adds even more security.

If it wasn't for the Garmin, you could just use Linux instead, which is free.

I have an Asus T100 with the 32GB main storage and the 500GB HDD in the keyboard, battery and HDD setup.

32GB here is good enough for browsing and maybe 2 apps but after that we are using the 500GB for user files and apps.
