Question

Is 3 Mbps internet speed appropriate for me?

Dec 3, 2012 3:36AM PST

Hello,

I currently use time warner (standard Internet) that has 15 Mbps and i'm thinking to downgrade it to a much cheaper plan that offers only 3 Mbps. There is no "middle" plan between these two.

Generally, when my roommate and I are home, we tend to do the following things sometimes at the same time (on 2 different laptops):
1, Internet browsing, Facebook, e-mail chatting
2, Watch videos on Youtube/Facebook yahoo etc
3, Skype
4, Watch videos on streaming/listen to radio

Would a 3 Mbps be sufficient for what I need?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You might not like it

You didn't mention downloads, but if you ever download something like a Windows install disc image, or a lot of large photos, it can take a while even at 15 mbps. Streaming video and Skype also take a lot of bandwidth. It really depends on how often you do these things, how often you do it concurrently, and how patient you are. Personally I don't think I'd be happy with it. When I download a new version of something like pre-release Windows 8, it already takes 20-30 min., and I have a 20+ mpbs Comcast cable connection. If I had to do that at 3 mpbs, it could take hours. Admittedly I don't download 3-4 GB files very often, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like 3 mpbs unless I was really really tight on money.

Good luck.
