Is 150 KB/s download speed for Verizon DSL slow?

Sep 25, 2005 10:15AM PDT

I use to have charter cable and would download at around 300-400 KB/s
Now ive switched to DSL and download at 150 KB/s which blows.

A friend of mine who lives in a different area has verizon DSL but downloads between 300-400kb's

So it pisses me off to see my download speed at less than half than his.

One factor that might factor in is that i got the Verizon DSL through my apartment complex which already has it set-up for the people who live here. Unfortinatly no other internet service is available yet.

What could be causing these slow speeds, and what can i do to speed things up?

A few tweaks might help. . .

Go here http://www.broadbandreports.com/ On the left side, click Tests and Tools. Run the speed test. If you're not happy, look at Dr. TCP. Run the Tweak test for suggestions.

My Comcast cable was at 2.5 Mb/s. After the tests and tweaks it went to 3.8 Mb/s.

try using "Tz conection booster", search for it on google and download it.
the result in slow speeds might be because of your distance from verizons central office. but the connection booster might git u an extra 5 or 10kb if u wanna try. telll me what happens.

There is Verizon, and then there is Verizon.

Which do you actually have. Verizon Avenue is a Verizon/co-branded pile of who knows what that is only offered to apartment buildings. The other Verizon OnLine is a separate service sold to individuals. Also, as previously noted, DSL functions at slower speeds when your location is more distant from the central office (or remote terminal, if applicable). The speeds attained by a friend in a different location may or may not be attainable by you. To determine if the speed you are getting is reasonable requires more information about your exact circuit.

Also as previously noted, tweaks as recommended by BroadBandReports.com are often beneficial. It won't change the fundamental level of service you are getting from Verizon, but it might improve the efficiency of it for a noticable improvement in the functionality.
