IrfanView or Others

Dec 28, 2004 1:44PM PST

Hi;
I'm wanting to create a cd or a vcd slideshow, that can be viewed on a dvd player. I was hoping to find a free program that allows me to do that. I've downloaded one called PixPlay, that unfortunately has some limitations as an unregistered program. So 2 things:
1) Any suggestions on freeware programs that I can use?
2) Irfanview users - do you know if it can be used for this, i.e. create a slideshow, with pics, videos and sound, that can be burned as a vcd?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Swinny

IrfanView slideshow

While I haven't tried that (a slideshow for a DVD player) I do know that there are tools within IrfanView to make slideshows for your computer.

I would think you first have to find out if the DVD player and the IrfanView output type(s, since there may be several) are compatible.

I have made slideshows with Irfanview and I am quite pleased with them. If you have Nero (for CD burning) and the Nero plug-in from Irfanview, you can also make VCDs that are, as far as I can tell, superior in quality to any other program I've yet found. Instead of the lousy mpeg1 image size of 480-something by ??, Irfanview uses the full resolution image.

What I'd like to find out is how it does that, or find another program that can do the same - and allow me to create menus (thumbnails) and add sound.

In Irfanview you cannot include a sound file. Neither can you create menus.

Slide Show

I use Ulead DVD PictureShow 2.

You can produce NTSC at:
704 x 480 slide shows as VCD
720 x 480 slide shows as DVD

The manual makes it clear - to get that quality level for VCD you MUST NOT use any transition effects.

If you use transition effects, the program then creates a VCD with MPEG-1 Movie type file at 352 x 240.

When creating DVDs, it makes no difference if you use transition effects or not.

The program handles background and foreground sound.

You can have menus and sub-menus.
You are limited to 99 slides per show,
But you can have 99 shows on one VCD or DVD.

Ulead has updated this program since I bought mine and it now contain the "Ken Burns" effect. But don't use it if you are making VCDs.

KEN BURNS EFFECTS

WHY SHOULD I NOT USE THE KEN BURNS EFFECTS (PANNING) IF I AM MAKING VCD'S?

When you create the VCD,
you will get a MPEG-1 movie type file at 352x240 dpi.

If you do not use transitions and do not use Ken Burns effects, you will get 704x480 dpi images.

The 704x480 images look better.
