IPv4 Truth or Hoax? IP Squatting, IANA, Worth Investigating

Feb 4, 2011 6:37AM PST

Dear Buzz Out Gang and Crew,
All of this talk about the world running out of IPv4 numerical addresses may actually be a hoax. For those that may not want to believe this, take a look at the link below. This link points to the IANA IPv4 top level /8 holders.

http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv4-address-space/ipv4-address-space.xml

How To Read Lists:
Each block of /8 Top Class A IPs = 16 Million IPv4 Addresses

Of the Top Level IPv4 Holders:
Department of Defense: 9 blocks of /8, thats 9 x 16 Million IPv4 Addresses.

Apple: 017/8 = 16 Million IPv4 Addresses
MIT: 018/8 = 16 Million IPv4 Addresses
Ford: 019/8 = 16 Million IPv4 Addresses
AT&T: 012/8 & 032/8 = thats 2 x 16 Million IPv4 Addresses
Halliburton: 034/8 = 16 Million IPv4 Addresses
US Postal Service: 056/8 = 16 Million IPv4 Addresses
Level 3: 004/8 & 008/8 = thats 2 x 16 Million IPv4 Addresses

and many many more. You see my point? Why are all of these institutions and corporations sitting on these IP addresses? Does the DOD really need 144,000,000 or 144 Million IP addresses?

Hey people, I think that there maybe some IP squatting going on and it is at the entire worlds expense. I think that the question is at least worth asking these organizations as to why they are sitting on all of these IP addresses.

Later people.

These large companies and organisations aren't going to give up their property they've owned these IPs for years.

Stanford University returned theirs, why can't more follow?

Dear Nicholas,
Yes, this has been known for years. Stanford University several years ago returned their block of 16 Million IP addresses because of the shortage. So why does MIT, Ford, DOD and others need that many IP addresses? I am still think that the question is worth asking. Why does these institutions and corporations need that many IP addresses?
