Question

iPod won't mount

Apr 12, 2012 1:49AM PDT

In the last month, my iPod won't mount on my iMac 27" i5 running OS 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.1 (the latest version). The iPod is an old G5 80 GB Classic.

If I completely reset the iPod, it will mount, but of course everything then has to be copied over from scratch. I suspected that the latest version of iTunes might be the problem, but Disk Utility doesn't see it mounted, either.

Any idea what's happening?

Answer
As long as you have all the tracks

and other info from that iPod, I would go ahead and completely reset it if, as you believe, it will then mount, the copy back process is just something that can be done overnight.

Don't want to reset every time.

I want to fix things so I don't have to reset my iPod EVERY time I connect to my iMac.

Please, someone, figure out what has happened to my poor iPod that it won't mount itself any more without a reset.

Then restore the iPod to Factory Defaults,

and sync it again.

That should cure your problem.

I don't recall you saying that you had to reset the iPod EVERY time you connect it to your iMac, that was only mentioned in your last post.

I do sync it.

Yes, I have to reset the iPod almost every time I connect it to my Mac in order to get it to mount. Then I sync it. This works just once. The next time I connect, I have to reset again. This gets "old" very fast.

It's something.

We know we have a few parts to think about. The pod, cable, computer ports and the software.

I don't think it was too funny when my friend was moaning for months about sync issues and I said "try a new cable." They keep asking me to look but I never did since they didn't try the new cable. Last month I loaned them my cable which is all marked up with sharpie pens so I know it's mine and it worked fine. Then had to cut them off at lunches because they didn't return the cable. Well finally the cable is back yet they are moaning again.

Not sure what to make of that person but the stories about cables, ports and such continue. Since it works on other machines (does this one?) then it's usually not the pod but can be the cable, ports and then about software. We can replace that so I'm back to ports and cables.

PS. More about software.

Another person broke theirs by installing some privacy protection. And you would never dismiss such because it works after a reset. You learn this after too many times fixing it.

Looking for alternate cable.

I don't know offhand of anyone with the same cable, but it sounds like a good idea to try one. I'll try the old cable and see it the iPod mounts on my laptop. And perhaps I can borrow another cable from an Apple store.
