iPod Wheel Broken

I have an iPod Nano 5G, had it for around a year and a half, and recently the wheel started playing up.
If I lock and unlock the iPod, it will sometimes let me use the wheel for a few seconds, sometimes not.
It seems like plugging it into the computer (even without doing anything to it) seems to make it works for a while, then it stops...
I have the apple earphones with the controller. Is there a way to use the menus using those buttons?
The problems started after I restored the iPod (and 'updated' the software) and used a cheap Chinese charger. Would either of those be the problem?
Any ideas how to get it to work?
Thank You

In addition to Bob's excellent suggestion...

Are you anywhere close to an Apple store? If so, go online and make an appointment with the Genius Bar there. They've helped me with seemingly impossible problems.
