Here I went with an android phone with a super sized battery so I can get over a week on one charge. Not that you wanted that but it was what I wanted.

It's worked out well for me and the camera was good enough for me to leave my digital camera at home during trips.

My opinion....

....is that the new Motorola Razr is an excellent choice if you are using Verizon. Large display, ruggedly built and 8 mp camera. I am very pleased with it.

It really depends on your preference

If you go with a good iPhone or Android phone, be prepared to condense your music library, because there's only so much space on a phone. In addition, you probably want to bring a portable charger with you, because if you listen to a lot of music and your battery runs out, neither the phone nor the music player will be any good. The plus is that you only have to remember to bring one device.

On the other hand, if you listen to a lot of music, having a dedicated music player is a plus, because you get plenty of space and the battery life is independent of your phone's battery life -- you could even use your phone as a backup music source. On the contrary, you have to remember and lug around two devices.

If it was me, I'd aim for one device.

Do you have an issue carrying around two separate devices, or would you rather just keep everything conveniently in one device?

Pretty much any current cell phone can be turned into an mp3 player, particularly those with SD storage capabilities, or even the iPhone with its massive internal storage. However using one device puts a lot of wear and tear on the battery. I personally ditched my iPod classic for an android device running PowerAmp (available in the Google Play store) but there are plenty of alternatives on the market.
