Ipod seems to be dead!

Jul 5, 2005 7:34AM PDT

Ok...I haven't been able to get around to charging my ipod in about a week, and now that I have found the time to charge it, I assumed it to be dead. So, I followed the regular charging procedure (plugging the ipod wire into the USB port. Instead of the usual "Do Not Disconnect" message that normally pops up on the ipod screen, the image displayed was of that battery, only it showed it was about 1/3 full, and there was no present animation. Not being sure of what this was, I decided to play it safe and safely disconnect the ipod. After it was ejected, I plugged it back in again. This time, the Ipod is doing completely nothing! I checked the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, and it showed that the ipod was connected to the port, but the ipod itself isn't showing anything at all! Please help me!

Did you shutdown the mac?

Then power off and boot back up and reattach it? Did you try to reset the pod?

Yes! I did shut down my computer ( its windows by the way) and I attempted to restart the ipod, but it was no use. Basicly, its as if the ipod is on hold ( though it isn't) and all the button functions are useless Sad

Did you reset the ipod?

Here's the usual in case you don't have the instructions handy.

1. Make sure that iPod is plugged into AC power or your PC via FireWire or other power.

2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off.

3. Press the Play/Pause and Menu buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears onscreen.

4. The iPod has been reset.

Note: some custom settings may be lost. The on-the-go playlists are emptied, Main menu returns to its original state, and the alarm clock will be turned on.

Still Not Working!!!

Thanks for your help -- I really appreciate it! Unfortuneately no matter what button I press, it seems to have no effect on the ipod! This is so fustrating! Well...I'm going to call it quits for tonight, i'm leaving it in the firewire port, so maybe miraculously it will charge and somehow fix itself, (though we'll have to see, knowing my luck...) Once again, thanks!

hmm...ANOTHER problem!
Jul 5, 2005 11:03AM PDT

I also noticed that the port where the ipod should be connected in isn't listed in the "Safely Remove Hardware" list...it may seem to be a stupid question -but would this be relevant to the problem I'm having???

I usually reboot the PC when I see that.

Look up how to reset the iPod or check your manual in case I copied the steps wrong.

You missed the obvious problem Bob

Sounds like your rechargable battery is dead. It's a software problem, it probably doesn't show up as a removeable drive because it's not even on in the first place. If you can't get anything to function on it, it has no power. Replace the battery.

Fixed it!
