Ipod problems

I bought a 4G iPod and I think I ruined it before I even got to mess with it. I unplugged it during the initial process of installing it (thinking it needed to be charged first) and now the hard disk just spins and stops before I get the folder icon. Ishould I send it to Apple? And while I'm on the subject is there any way to remove any trace of the ipod from my system?
