IPod nano 4G / Bose Sound Dock question

Jul 2, 2009 3:22AM PDT

After my IPod Mini was recently stolen, I'm looking at replacing it with a Nano (4g?), but appears it will not charge in my Bose Sound Dock. That's a total bummer and now am wondering if there is a better choice than the 4G Nano. Otherwise it sounds like it is a really good choice. Anybody have any suggestions?

if I'm not mistaken

The Bose Sound Dock is specifically for iPods. And yes, the older Sound Docks do not work for charging with the newest generation of iPods. But the should play. It has to do with firewire charging. Apple got rid of the last remnants of firewire with the most recent generation across all iPod models. There are adapters that you can use to connect to the Sound Dock that may work, but they're not very elegant. Scoche and Griffin make them.

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm trying to learn. What does firewire have to do with the Bose SoundDock?

I figured it out

I thought the sounddock charged via usb, but its firewire instead. Seems an unusual choice.

Via iLounge Q&A (6/26/09) that the 120GB iPod Classic retains both USB and Firewire charging capabilities so your SoundDock will work with it.

yeah but I wanted the Nano

Yeah, but the Classic is more than I wanted to buy. Really liked everything about the Nano except the sound dock shortcoming. Oh well.

You'll still be able to play the 4G Nano on it. I'm sure you already knew that. But there is no non-iPod player that will work on the SoundDock because it uses the iPod's proprietary connection. If I'm not mistaken it doesn't even have an aux input.
