Answer
Sounds like some USB port problem.

To trouble shoot you change the iPod out and if it still fails the vehicle needs repair. I cringe at how much to fix that.

Maybe it would be cheaper to change the car's audio system?

Agree swapping the ipod out could be an option

Answer
I wonder if the USB cable is not all it should be.

Good enough for the iMac but not good enough for the car Audio system.

Not so sure about your "it plays on iMac computer and other USB devices" though.

I've never played my iPod while it was connected to the computer and I'm not sure that it plays like that. (I could be wrong though)

Have you tried another USB cable, could be the cheap fix you are looking for

Thanks for your reply. It's a new cable in fact the original cable was a bit past it but did play on the car sterio. You can play the contents of your ipod on any computer via USB through I tunes. Other people are having the same issue as me at the moment with their ipod classics which makes me wonder is it an Apple software issue with the latest software updates
