General discussion

iphoto and shooting raw

Apr 24, 2007 1:43AM PDT

Well thank you to all of those who had responded to my question regarding mac vs pc's. I decided I am going to buy the imac. I went into our local apple store and checked them out, and now I can't ever go back to PC. Anyways, my cannon came with some very good software for editing photos in raw, and obviosly I can't download that software onto an imac. Is iphoto capable of editing raw photos? How does it do?

does not accommodate editing in raw but Aperture, $299.00, a professional editing suite, does.

I dont know which Canon camera you have. I was looking at the 350d (digital rebel xt) and it includes software for your mac. If you have that cam then you should have a mac prgram included. I dont know about other cameras but I am sure they would have included a mac software for raw. Just tell me which camera you have and I will find out for you.

canon 30D

I have a Canon EOS 30D. And it is strange because I keep reading all these articles on the internet saying that iphoto6 CAN edit photos in the raw. I even asked the salesman and he said yes, but I didn't just want to take his word for it because it is trying to sell it to me.

Bummer. Well, thanks for looking into that for me. I really appreciate it. I'm just a little lost with all this apple stuff because i've never used one. I already have Photoshop Elements 4.0 that I can download onto a PC, and picasa2 is free of course. Maybe I should just stick with a Dell or something.

Why bummer? RAS is supported if you have the current OS.

I take it that you don't have that?

I did some more checking on this and
Apr 25, 2007 3:35AM PDT

found that iPhoto 6 does support RAW but in less formats than Photoshop Elements.
If you set iPhoto to open an image in an external editor, Elements for example, it converts the raw file to jpg and passes it off. This, of course, defeats the reason for having a RAW format in the first place.
Dragging the RAW file to the Elements icon will get around this problem.

Photoshop Elements is available for the Mac and as has been mentioned, Canon have Mac software for editing RAW.

Of course, if your a student, teacher, or qualify for some sort of educational discount... 50% off.

Then again, academic price for photoshop is pretty sweet too.
