Question

iPhone wifi connection disconnecting

Aug 13, 2012 11:29AM PDT

i have had my iPhone 4S connected to my laptop wifi which works good, BUT it keeps disconnecting for no apparent reason.

my laptop does have a problem in that it has always turned itself off, then back on again, a problem the techs tell me, its had since manufacture, but not using it often I did nothing about the warranty.

but even when the laptop is going, the wifi connection will disconnect.

Any solutions please??

Best idea I have.

Don't use the WiFi for the connection. Use USB. See the linked article I gave below.

I'm not sure what you mean by asking what channel the router is on, can you please explain to me??

I'm sorry, someone somehow put why?, and it wasn't me ...

Tethered

my son told me to tell you that the wifi is tethered to my iPhone S4
does that help??

Sorry no.

Again, the channel the router is on would tell me if one of the usual issues is in play.

Here's a link about that -> http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1567/~/how-do-i-change-my-router%27s-wireless-channel-and-network-name-%28ssid%29%3F

Remember that I only have the information you provide. As to the TETHER, I fear this is not true. When we tether we are doing this (link only) -> http://ipod.about.com/od/iphonesoftwareterms/g/iphone-tethering-definition.htm

If you were tethering an iPhone then you would not be trying to connect to a router.

I don't think I am trying to connect to a router.
Aug 14, 2012 3:21PM PDT

I don't think I am trying to connect to a router, I have my laptop set up to my iPhone, and I have to go into Settings, then Personal Hotspot and have it turned on. There is a Wifi password in there that hooked me up to my laptop. That's all that's involved.

Sorry but all the above is an example.

Where details matter. The Personal Hotspot can indeed fail for far too many reasons.

Most common is that channel (again) and I can't find your answer to this basic question.

Here's an article about iPhone and it's hotspot troubleshooting.

If you used WEP security, we know that's broke.

Answer
Another issue.

Many internet cell connections drop every hour. Be sure you are not trying to fix that. That issue is widely discussed and this discussion is a fine example where details matter. It could be as simple as the iPhone switched off.

Thanks for your help I truly appreciate it, but I'm afraid its all above my head.
I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say I haven't answered your basic question, sorry.

Coming up for air.

Let's try basic stuff.

1. The internet does drop about once an hour. Since it reconnects it's rarely a big deal except for folk that are trying to stream video or torrents.

2. There is a basic question about what WiFi channel the hotspot is on. If you find it, tell us. It can clear off a concern I have.

3. Finally there is that silly issue the iPhone just turned off. Could be low battery or other issue but if you tether it via USB then the iPhone is getting a charge and all the WiFi issues vanish.
